Lyndsey Scott: The model who dreams in code
Lyndsey Scott is a New York City model working for Prada, Gucci and Victoria's Secret. She's also an iOS programmer with two apps she created available in the Apple store.
The self-described "geek model" started programming in middle school and does not see any contradiction between her careers in fashion and the tech world.
Ms Scott is also a mentor at Girls Who Code, an organisation that helps teenage girls learn programming.
She talked to the BBC about challenging people's preconceptions about beauty as well as taking on stereotypes about women in technology.

[BBC]

Obama asks Australia for help
The US and UK have asked for Australia do more to fight the spread of Ebola in West Africa, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says.
Mr Abbott told MPs he had discussed the Ebola outbreak on a phone call with US President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

The government has said it will not send Australians to Africa until it can guarantee their safety.

The disease has killed more than 4,800 people in the worst affected countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. More than 9,900 people have been infected.
Australia has contributed A$18m ($15.7m, £9.8m) to combat Ebola, but the government had previously said it would not send Australian medical teams to Africa until an "iron-clad" agreement on evacuating health workers who may become infected had been reached.

Mr Abbott's government has argued that Australia is too far from Africa for a medical evacuation so a third country would need to provide medical assistance for an Australia patient.

"There is a world of difference from volunteers going… and the government ordering Australian defence personnel to go," Mr Abbot said last week.

Peter Varghese, head of the foreign department, has said there are talks ongoing with a number of countries to reach an evacuation deal.

Mr Abbott has said that Australia must focus on preparing for a potential outbreak in Asia. But he told parliament on Thursday he was "carefully considering" the requests from Australia's allies.

Mr Abe said he took responsibility for having appointed both women, and that they would be replaced within a day. Both are members of his governing conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Ms Obuchi, 40, was one of five women appointed by Mr Abe in his cabinet reshuffle last month and was tipped by some as a future prime minister.

But allegations emerged last week that her staff had misused thousands of dollars of campaign funds.

"I take seriously the impact I have caused," she said. She also apologised for being unable to contribute to key goals set by Mr Abe, including economic recovery and "a society where women shine".

Australian PM Tony Abbott has said he plans to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin over the shooting down of a Malaysian passenger plane in July.
MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine. All 298 passengers, including 38 Australians, died.

Mr Abbott said they were "murdered with Russian support". Pro-Russian rebels denied being behind the attack.

He is set to meet Mr Putin at the G20 meeting in Brisbane in November.

The prime minister told reporters on Monday: "Look, I'm going to shirtfront Mr Putin ... you bet I am."

Shirtfronting is an Australian football term which means aggressively charging and knocking down one's opponent.

"I am going to be saying to Mr Putin [that] Australians were murdered. They were murdered by Russian-backed rebels using Russian-supplied equipment," he said in remarks quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr Putin has denied Russia had any involvement in the incident. Mr Abbott has faced criticism at home for allowing Mr Putin to attend the summit.

French economist Jean Tirole won the 2014 economics Nobel Prize for his analysis of market power and regulation...

Tirole, 61, works at the Toulouse School of Economics in France and has a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“From the mid-1980s and onwards, Jean Tirole has breathed new life into research on such market failures,” the academy said, adding his work has strong bearing on how governments deal with mergers or cartels and how they should regulate monopolies.
“In a series of articles and books, Jean Tirole has presented a general framework for designing such policies and applied it to a number of industries, ranging from telecommunications to banking,” the academy said.
Before Tirole, the academy said, policy-makers advocated simple rules including capping prices for companies with a monopoly and banning cooperation between competitors. Tirole showed that in some circumstances, such rules can do more harm than good.

Tirole ↓
Drawing on insights based on Tirole’s work, “governments can better encourage powerful firms to become more productive and, at the same time, prevent them from harming competitors and customers,” the academy said.
